DESCRIPTION:   The Community Polio Vaccination program went into high gear in July of 1957 as volunteers organized by the local chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis worked at the Health Center Building packing sterile supplies, labelling cases and checking supplies for each night's clinics. Free polio shots were given to the general public at 20 polio clinics held at fire stations across the county. In the summer of 1957 there were still 45,000 residents who had not been immunized. During the first week of immunizations, 4,781 received shots. Medical practitioners targeted adults between 20-40 to be vaccinated. Precautionary posters advised the unvaccinated to get polio shots to play it safe. Helping organize supplies are: Back row, (l to r) Mrs. Clara Schnuriger, R.N., Mrs. Charles Raymond, Mrs. Tracy Butler, Mrs. Don Jacobsen, Mrs. Melvin Grant and Mrs. Jack Segal. In front: (l to r) Mrs. Douglas Firth and Mrs. John Bishop. (Photograph ordered by the Community Polio Vaccination Program.) (TNT 7-7-57, B-5, TNT 7-21-57, A-3)
